Boundaries: Ecological thinking in Art and Design; A social paradigm
(Elder Trees - root logic)

As part of this action research project, I am developing a comprehensive visual database of mature trees that are 150 years or older in the City of Hamilton. By identifying these trees as important community anchors with cultural and ecological value, this body of research discusses strategies for tapping into root systems of established trees to site new forest oases within the city. Through expanding notions of ‘conservation’ beyond Cootes Paradise conservation lands, this project will assist the city of Hamilton with a rationale to increase Hamilton’s urban forest from 21% to 30%, and introduce a private tree bylaw.
